B-AMZNG! Check out Weil-McLain ProTools™ App, an innovative mobile application that helps heating professionals maintain and troubleshoot Weil-McLain boilers.

Available for iOS and Android devices, the ProTools App is a one-stop resource for boiler installation and maintenance, providing contractors with everything they need to complete their jobs quickly and efficiently! B-AMZNG!

Winstel Controls provided great advanced fundamentals of steam and water training. This 2-hour class was presented by Cory Golden of Weil-McLain. It is what we stand for to B-AMZNG!

Lessons learned in class to B-AMZNG!:

From the start boiler basics such as boiler sizing is covered. Did you know that you should choose a boiler based on the Net Steam Rating in square foot or the Net Steam Rating in BTU/hr? For example one square foot of steam @ 215 degrees equals 240 BTU. So if you have steam boiler with model number EG-45 Net Steam Rating of 93,000 BTU/hr divided by 240 BTU/ft2 equals 388 steam sq. ft.

Learning about boilers is important to understand the construction of a boiler, engineering design for performance, pipe size and exit velocity, system design and pressure drop in one and two pipe systems. Furthermore, air vents are critical to avoid pockets of air in the system which can impact proper heating, operation and comfort.

Fun Fact:

Why can’t one put a check valve into the return line to keep water in the boiler? Drumroll, the answer is because dirt can lodge under the check valve seat, effectively causing it to stay open. Additionally, greater pressures can force water from the boiler into the return. UGH?!?! So, if you want to keep water in the boiler if greater pressure in the boiler forces’ water from the boiler into the return what should you do?? And here you go–the answer is to install the “Hartford Loop” piping system.

Boilers exploded in the late 1800’s. Here is why:

Let’s take a walk down memory lane. Do you know how many boilers exploded between the years of 1879 and 1891 or for this 12 year period? Wow the answer is 2,159 steam boilers exploded. That is one every 48 hours. Furthermore 4,352 serious injuries were reported and 3,123 people died. WHY YOU MIGHT ASK? Well, the answer is the boilers ran out of water. The predominate problem was Low Water Cutoff conditions. Back then, there were no low-water cutoffs during the days of old. The first low-water cutoff was invented around 1923. And the Hartford Loop is recommended to keep water in the boiler.

Time for preventative maintenance on boilers and ProTools App for contractors:

So guess what, now is the time to call your mechanical contractor and make sure you have a proactive preventive maintenance plan in place for not only efficient operation of your boiler but to stay safe.

Mechanical Contractors, check out the ProTools App as a one-stop resource for boiler installation and maintenance. I learned about it during the class and it is cool! Want to learn more about how to customize and sell agreements and provide solutions? Apply and enroll in the next Masterclass.

Regulators and Meters

Continuing education is critical! Great class today on regulators and meters at Winstel Controls facilitated by Norgas Controls.

Here is a helpful tip on regulator sizzing. The three requirements are inlet pressure, desired outlet pressure and maximum capacity. Always use minimum inlet pressure expected and maximum flow required when considering capacity needs.

For gas meter sizing for sub-metering, energy management and utility billing need max capacity, inlet pressure and remote (pulse output).

For proactive preventative maintenance on meters, don’t forget to check to make sure there is oil! There are two ports on the side of the Norgas Controls Meter. Look to see red and you know there is oil inside for proper lubrication!
